Build A Solid Foundation

Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I tell you?  I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. But he who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.” – Luke 6:46-49 NRSVCE

When you’re building anything, we know we want to build a solid foundation to start. If we are going to build our family, our business and our life on something, we want to be certain that it is solid. Everyone faces difficulties and challenges in their life, so how are we going to respond when we face these difficulties? What path are we going to take? We certainly don’t want to spend our life on a path that we thought was the correct path only to find out later in life that we were headed in the wrong direction or the shaky foundation we built our life upon is crumbly under our feet!

In a previous writing, I discussed setting your priorities and starting with God first. But what does that look like? Think of the Bible as a guidebook or “how to” manual. The church teachings, our priests, our church community, and the Saints help us understand how to live this Word every day so that we can teach and spread the Good News through our actions and our words.

In this scripture from Luke, Jesus is teaching us that to build a solid foundation we need to hear His words and do them. On the contrary, if we hear them and don’t do them, we are on very shaky ground and a weak foundation.

Prior to battle, David would pray and ask the Lord for direction. By hearing the Word and then doing it, he was successful in battle. When he didn’t pray and did what he wanted to do, he failed. In Proverbs it teaches us,

Those who trust in their own wits are fools; but those who walk in wisdom come through safely.”  – Proverbs 28:26 NRSVCE

Often we find ourselves in these situations, we do what we want to do and then we rationalize and justify what we did. It feels right so we do it. I think this is what I should do, so I do it. This can often be where we get ourselves into trouble.

In the book of Sirach, “All wisdom is from the Lord…“. (Sirach 1:1 NRSVCE). Later he writes, “To fear the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…” (Sirach 1:14 NRSVCE). So, all wisdom is from the Lord and the beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord, but what is fear of the Lord? Does it mean that I should live in fear? Aren’t we to live in hope and trust in the Lord? Yes! I have heard “fear of the Lord” described better as awe of the Lord. Father Mike Schmitz has described it as taking the Lord seriously. If we were living in awe of the Lord and taking the Lord seriously, what would this look like? What does listening and doing the Word look like? The Bible is the Word of the Lord. Jesus, the Apostles, and the Saints are the best examples of how to live out the Word.

In other words, to build a solid foundation for my family and my business I need to listen to the Word and do what it tells me. When faced with decisions, I should take God seriously and put Him first, pray about it, and look to the Bible, Jesus, the Saints, and other church leaders to help me discern the right choice that would be putting God first and listening to the Word. Do you have the courage and fortitude to listen to Him and act on it?

Take care and God bless. I’m praying for you. Please pray for me.

    Additional Wisdom from the Bible
    • Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell – and great was its fall!” – Matthew 7:24-27 NRSVCE
